The cruise control on this truck will work for a few days and then stop for a couple of weeks before working again. The cycle has been going on since at least November but the time before working again is getting longer and longer.
I have bought a multimeter but have never used one before. Not entirely sure how to check wires without stripping them.

You check from connections whatever you do do not strip wires unless they need repair. Have a mechanic scan for codes first not an auto parts scanner. It may be the clock spring inside the steering column that is bad.

Thank you for your reply. Can you tell me which connections I should be checking? And if it was the clock spring would not that cause the airbag light to come on? If so then that has not happened.

The cruise control goes through PCM and returns to switch through the clock-spring which has to be checked with a scanner. Here is resistance test for switch in picture. Also, check the relay for good contact in fuse box under hood. It may be corroded or not making good contact hence the trouble.
