Transmission problem
1994 Infiniti G20 96000 miles

while checking something else, found both front CV boot broken and grease leaking. Appears to be recent. No obvious abnormal-no driving noise or jerking. Quesiton: should I repack the joint and repalce the boots only or replace the whole thing-CV axle (over $600 estimate). Are there shops doing repacking; Where to find cheap part of CV axle if necessary, given that the car is old. Thanks!

It is acrap shoot on replacing the boots. Chances are good if it appears the boots are still holding grease and not all of it has been spun out. Safe way is to go with a couple of reman axles. Junk yard is a possiblility but still a crap shoot. The majority of the cost in either case is in labor.

There are cv boots available that can be installed without removing the axle.I have not used them myself, but have seen them used and appear to work.

Jzc, just did one of my axles that had a bad boot. I bought the boots for about $30 each with new grease at local auto parts.
