Ignition switch

Without any prior problems, I turned key to start car and the key didn't work. As in, I turned the key and it seems as if something isn't catching inside, like gears are slipping.
( I don't believe there are gears, just using descriptive wording) I purchased a new key/cylinder for steering column. It doesn't seem to be the fix.

What else could be going on?

Yes, there is a gear/rod/switch which is sounds like one of them has broken or failed. Here are diagrams of the assembly so you can see how it works and how to fix it. Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.
