When I start my car and the key returns to the on position my starter still engages. Moving the key makes it stop. Do I need a new ignition switch?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.

Based on your description, it sounds like that is the problem. What you really need to do is remove the switch and check if there is an issue between the tumbler and the switch itself. Keep in mind, the tumbler which you put the key into isn't the actual switch. It is attached to it.

Here are the directions for removing and replacing both. Let me know if it helps. The last picture shows the actual switch.

IGNITION SYSTEM

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
2. Remove the shroud (Steering column cover).

3. Remove the ignition switch (A) after loosening the screw (B) with IG ON and disconnecting the 6P connector (C).
4. Remove the steering column cover.

5. Remove the door warning switch and key illumination lamp (A) after loosening the screw and disconnecting the 6P connector.

6. If it is necessary to remove the key lock cylinder (A), Remove the key lock cylinder (A) after pushing lock pin (B) with key ACC.

INSTALLATION
1. Install the key lock cylinder.
2. Install the door warning switch and key illumination lamp.
3. Install the steering column cover.
4. Install the ignition switch.
5. Install the crash pad lower panel.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe
