Ignition switch is sticky

Car starts abut the key is able to come out while car is running and in motion. Also, when I try to turn my car all the way off it gets stuck in acc and wont then anymore but key comes out. Says “ key in ignition “ although it’s not.

Hi,

It sounds like the tumbler in the lock assembly is bad. Have you tried a different key? If you try again, can you turn the ignition fully off? Have you tried to lubricate the tumbler to see if that helps?

Let me know. You may need to replace the key lock assembly.

I don’t have another key, I can try to go get another made today. What should I lubricate it with?

Hi,

Try a different key, but if the original is worn, the cutter will make the new one the same. As far as lubricant, they make a specific type of grease for lock assemblies. I feel that most parts stores should have it. When you get to the store, ask specifically for a lubricant that is designed for lock cylinders.

I have seen people use very small amounts of products such as WD40. However, that always bothered me because it's too easy to spray too much into the lock.
