The head gasket is probably blown or cracked and I was told to replace the engine. I realize that I could just get it fixed but swapping the engine might be better, as the new engine will have fewer K's. The xtrail has done over 350000 k's, the body is in good shape and I want to keep it for towing a trailer and off road/beach.

Can I put the a 2009 xtrail engine in easily or will that cause problems? Will they have the same engine mounts and use the same electrics?

Any advice would greatly be appreciated.
Cheers

My only advise is this. Car manufacturers change things from one year to the next. Simple things as where a sensor goes, or how the sensor mounts. What I have found is this. Anytime I change any major component, such as an engine, if I don't have the exact same year and type of engine, there are problems. The most common problem, sensor which are different causing the check engine light to come on. This results in a vehicle that won't pass emissions inspection.
