2007 Hyundai Sonata 6 cyl Automatic 63,666 miles

May 17th I tried to drive my car to work and the check engine light came on, the esc off light came on and I could not accelerate above 20 mph. I drove the car back home and parked in my driveway where I saw excessive white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipes. I checked the coolant and found that it was below the L line so I added coolant. An hour later I started it back up. The esc off light was no longer illuminated only the check engine light and I could accelerate. I took the car to auto zone and got the three codes: P2106, P1295 and P2135. I took the car to a mechanic. They had it till friday the 21st and couldn't find anything wrong. I went to drive the car again on Sunday. I drove maybe 5 miles and the car seemed fine. I went to park in my driveway and found that there was a large amount of white smoke coming out of the exhaust again. I also heard a knocking sound while the car was idling in Drive. I took it back to the mechanic and he said he cannot find anything wrong. Any ideas?

Based on your description, you have a bad head gasket. When coolant enters the combustion chamber, it burns white. If a lot gets in, it could cause damage to a connecting rod (bend) because liquids can't compress. Therefore, that could be the knocking you hear.

Have you noticed that the coolant level has dropped again? Also, check the motor oil to see if it appears as if coolant is mixing with it. You may also want to remove the plugs to see if any of the plugs look odd.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

I checked the oil and it is no cloudy so there is no coolant mixing with it at this point. I get the car back tomorrow and will be able to check then to find out if the coolant level is low again. The mechanic suggested taking it to the dealer to get an appropriate diagnosis.
