Smoking Hyundai

I have a 2001 Hyundai Sante Fe (4 cylinder). It has 127,000 miles on it. It recently started smoking from the tail pipe. It leaves a black residue in the muffler. What could the problem be? It seems to smoke more as I sit idle at stop lights. Please help.

The check engine light has been on ever since I first purchased the vehicle 5 years ago. The smoke is black I think. It's hard to tell.

For a start have your coolant temperature and oxygen sensors check
