For the last 6 months I could hear a squeal as I started and turned my car, especially when it is cold out. As of the last month or so when I turn my engine on the squeal is still there however, there is now a loud clunking noise. The best way I can think to describe it is the sound an old pull-start lawn mower makes. It also make the same clunk (but more subdued) when I am sitting at stop lights if I have my foot fully on my brake. What could this be?

Hello,

The squealing sound it likely the belt. As the serpentine belt gets old the rubber in the belt can glaze and when that happens the belt will loose traction and will slip during startup or when it's cold. It will make that squealing noise.

Here is a helpful article:

The clunking noise could from the engine. Check the oil level. If the oil level is low the engine can make that noise as the oil is not reaching the upper part of the engine.

Please let me know of any questions.
Thank you.
