Howling sound

At speeds over 35 mph there is a very loud sound coming from the rear it sounds like it needs to shift but the tachometer shows that it is shifting.

Check for a bad wheel bearing and or a brake problem, might be squealers on brakes letting you know it is time for brake job. With that sound goes away when brakes are applied.

But it is shifting according to the tachometer. But it just whines out like its very high rpm's.

Well if sound is coming from back and you have forward then it has to be what I replied or something similar. You can have it scanned for codes at auto parts see if they come up with anything. Like a bad converter etc.
