My husband just changed the oil in my friends car but he over filled the oil. He put way too much oil in the car. Never the less he drained it completely He drained the oil out of the car but it came out black and now the tailpipe is filled with the oil as well. The oil was in the car for no more than 15 or 20 minutes. What happened and what should we do?

I have to ask you a couple questions. First, is this the first time the oil was changed in a long time? If so, the new oil has a detergent in it and if the engine is dirty inside, it will get dirty really fast. As far as oil coming out of the exhaust. That is odd. How over full did he make it?

I don't know how much he overfilled it but I figure a good 2 or 3 quarts. Before he began to change the oil he did notice a leak under the car and around the head gasket or motor. There was a spark plug totally corroded but he went ahead and put oil in the car because he wanted to see were the oil was leaking from. His mistake was the dipstick he was checking was for the transmition (which was totally empty) and not the oil. Soon after he turned on the car and oil was coming out of the exhaust. Is it possible something was already broken or ruin before he put the oil in. As far as when the last time the oil was changed in the car? I don't know and since my friend just recently got the car she may not know either.

Since you ran it for a short time, I don't think you hurt the engine.
