1998 Honda Passport burns oil but doesn't leak

Hi. I have a 1998 Honda Passport that burns oil, but doesn't leak or blow smoke. It's got around 170,000 miles, it's a 4 wheel drive. And is 6 cylinder. I am not able to make it completely to the next oil change w/o adding oil. I'm told there's additives that can be used at the next oil change that will seal the gaskets, etc and prevent the burn off from occurring. I'm just not sure if this is what I should do as I understand that this might create more problems by sloughing off gunk inside the engine and clogging other parts of it. Also, I was driving along the other day and sped up to get around another car and when I did this, it suddenly became extremely loud. Like the exhaust needs repaired/replaced. Then I noticed a ticking sound coming from the engine when I am idling. Although I think it makes the sound when driving.I just can't hear it. In addition, when it changes gears, I feel like it revs too high before switching into that next gear. But that seems to have happened when the loud exhaust began. Any suggestions? If I end up needing to get the engine rebuilt/replaced, approximately what cost should I expect for parts and labor?

You ask a lot. Engine rebuild vs. Buying a good used. Foor for thought. You worry about hurting the engine on one hand by adding additives and then talk about the eventual inevitable rebuild or such. There are additives at Walmart that reduce oil consumption. Even some of the oils are designed for older cars to slow oil consumption. You might want to check the exhaust manifold to see if it is cracked. Take off the protective cover and have a good look at it.

Hi -- I had the same issue and just recently took it to a auto repair shop. I was told it was the Rod knocking and it was a damaged engine.

I was also told that the vehicle would need a new or used engine to replace the existing.

I was quoted $2.500 for a used engine and $2,000 labor.

I am thinking of buying an new car instead of repairing.

Is this a good choice or is quote too high?
