The flashing "D" on the instrument panel is a feature that your vehicle uses to let the driver know there is a fault found in the transmission system. This could be wiring faults or more serious issues such as pressure problems within the transmission.

The TCU (transmission control unit) of this vehicle is very common to go faulty and cause the symptoms you are experiencing. You may want to have a reputable transmission shop run a diagnostic test on it to see what component is going bad.
