Hi,
The water pump seized and snapped the timing belt while accelerating in 2nd gear. It has an aluminum (aluminium) block. The front crankshaft pulley nut appears very tight. Is it counter rotating or normal? What is the best way to loosen it?
Also, it is a 12 valve, will there be any valve damage?
The engine has done 300,000 km and has never been opened.
thank you,
Ken

Good chance of valve damage, but who knows. The harmonic balancer is the pulley you are trying to remove. They are normal thread direction. There is supposed to be a place you insert a bolt to lock the engine but I don't always find it or it does not do the job. Sometimes an impact wrench will do the job. Other times a strap wrench on the pulley itself with the socket on the nut will do the trick.
