Left rear tail light assembly

Need to replace entire rear tail light assembly. I can remove the assembly but it appears that the electrical connector is inside the body of the car and I don't know how to access it. Do I need to remove the bumper or what. I bought a new assembly thinking I could replace it myself but not sure now.
