I have a 1998 Honda Civic LX 1.6L Non-Vtec "sohc" I believe, 150k Miles, Front Wheel Drive. Automatic No leakage of any kind.
Recently Tuned up by Me. I'm not Entirely mechanically stupid. I purchased New Air Filter, New Fuel Filter New NGk plugs New Plug Wires New Dist Cap and New Dist Rotor. Nothing Found out of the ordinary, Car Doesn't smoke, no oil on spark plugs when replacing them, Fuel Filter was actually clean nothing gunky came out when I changed it out. I Put Shell gas in Normally mid Grade. I don't drive it hard or rough. This issue I'm having Has been occuring before the replacement of these parts and still continues after the replacement.
Basically The car Will Die at Random, Sunny, Rainy, Full Tank of Gas or just above empty, Doesn't matter I've noticed Normally when the car has been running for a few hours. But It's Started up then Died also, So again Random occurance. It's been happening more and more and gradually getting worse"as in happening more often" No "check Engine" Light appears and Has never appeared. Only appears when starting the car "normal" and then goes away. When Attempting to start the car after it's died it starts/dies Starts/dies basically the RPm's go to about 1k then the engine dies again. Wash repeat. For about 4-5Mins sometimes It starts right back up like nothing ever happened.
It "could" be cause it's getting hot. But nothing has pointed to that element because it's sat overnight started worked for 4-5 mins and then died. The Engine Coolant runs fine in-fact the car Runs almost perfectly nothing noticeably off Sounding if that makes any sense. Basically the cars RPms and the speedometer will Go Erratic then the car dies Immediatly then I notice, no power the stereo Turns Off then on. No Power to windows or Locks Etc, the car is just dead. I'll have to rotate the key forward for the power options"pw, pdl etcs to work again" There is no Hesitation no jolt no stutter in fact you don't even notice accept for 1 element I hear a loud "click" and I see the stereo Turning off and then on. Sometimes It will start right back up Sometimes takes 4-5 mins. When the car gets started back up I don't normally have a repeating issue for quite some time. Sometimes hours Sometimes even days will go by with no issue. It's never Died on the Freeway Over 45+ miles, Always in town and under 45 Mph. Doesn't matter if I'm stopping or Accellerating Etc. When it wants to die it just does. I've been told it's Either the Distr Or ICM or the Actual ECM itself All of which are expensive to randomly replace. It's never been in the Shop for any issue. And It hasn't been Modified. I've never had it tested with that OBD Gagdet. Ive checked and Rechecked all the connections everything is pretty snug Nothing loose the fluids are pretty much topped off. When running the car barely makes any noise at all a light hum. It's just so Aggrevating when your rolling down the road and you hear a click and the cars dead. If you could Shine Some light on the situation that would be great. Thank you so much.

I would start with the ignition switch. It sounds suspect to me.

I know this is an old post, but I am having the same problem with my '99 Civic LX and was wondering if replacing the ignition switch fixed the problem?
