96 Civic EX shifting problem

I have a 96 Honda Civic EX coupe with 154,000 miles. Over the last year, I have had this odd shifting thing happen, then disappear. When put in drive, there is a "thud", and it shifts into gears really hard. Mechanic has checked everything they can think of. Anyone else have this problem?

It is probably the gear select cable which runs from the gearbox to the transmission, you might have to replace it as it may have became taught
