95 Honda Civic DX Speedometer problem

One problem though, every so often, the speedometer, odometer, and trip meter all go out (basically center unit of the console). The needle will jump up and down for a second or so and then drop to 0 even on the highway. Eventually it comes back on (either within a minute or so and once or twice it has stayed off for 40 miles). I've witnessed this happening both when hitting a bump and when not hitting a bump so it may not be a loose wire. Any thoughts as to what might be causing this and how I could get it fixed for cheap?

Likely the answer is the VSS sensor on the tranny. During the times when it is working right you can get a reading using a volt-ohm meter. During the time when it is not, pull over and check the readings again. If they are the same replace the cluster or check for bad connections. Readings are different replace the VSS.
