I have the same model and year and had the exact same problem on 12/31 - 185000 miles. Kid plugged DVD player into c lighter and after that the speedometer went erratic and lights flicker. Speedometer reads 0 when moving on road but occasionally spikes. When car is stationary, reving engine causes speedometer to record speed and odometer to record mileage as though car is moving.

Check engine light has been on for 5 months. Requires new catalytic converter. Can't imagine that these two things are related. Anybody's thoughts?

If the alternator is not functioning correctly it will not provide the computer the electrical pressure needed therefore the computer wiil not receive and act to the input signal to activate an actuator/s
