2006 Honda Civic Connecting Rod Bearings

OK, so this is my fourth post on this, but I would really like to get this fixed. This is what the mechanic has told me.
The car is making a clacking noise that is consistent with the rpms. He found that is was coming from cylinder four, and took out the oil filter and found silver metal shavings(very small) inside. He said that the connecting rod bearing are bad, and that he recommended getting another engine. Its very costly, because even a engine from a salvaged car is over $1500.
My question is, can I pull the oil pan to check the crankshaft for damage? How hard is it to replace the bearings, and how do I do that? I am very limited on budget, but I would really like to save this car. What do you suggest. Can I just replace the bearings? And how do I flush out the engine? Thanks for your help. Hi there,

drain the sump, remove the exhaust and any splash shields, and remove the sump, you can easily access the rod bearings, you will need to note the alignment of the caps and bearing shells as this is critical, you can check the main caps, but you will not be able to replace main bearings with out removing the engine, re torque the cap & main bolts to the correct tension, was the sump change the filter and do a second oil change with filter after the engine warms up.
