2003 Honda Civic 4 cyl Automatic 115000 miles

While driving yesterday I felt something "pop" under the gas pedal. The gas pedal didn't work and was limp. I saw a cable hanging.

Mechanic said the acceleration cable broke and that "shouldn't happen". Any idea how this can happen and how much it will cost to fix? Should I contact Honda about it?

First of all it shouldn't have happened. They can tell by examining the cable whether it was defective, caused by a problem along the path of the cable or damage caused by weather, etc. Probably defective.

Pretty simple to replace but I would suggest examining as it is put in how unencumbered the pathway for the cable is. Remove or move any obstructions that could cause undo wear and tear on the cable.
