My car Honda Civic EX 2001 have a problem dieing on the road and I can be driving at any speed and it would die. I have drove it on freeway and in the back streets. After it dies the car would start right up again, the problem is when the car is moving. The problem is intermittent I could drive for 6-8 miles and the engine can shut off at anytime. The Honda dealer had my car for over 3 weeks, when I get it back its the same problem over again. They have tried replacing the ignition switch (electrical portion part # 35130 S5a J51) and the ECM or ECU. I have paid around $1500 in repairs. I have tried replacing the battery, spark plugs and changing the oil. I have check the air cleaner and it is still good. I drive the car normally, I don't tend to speed, I change the oil every 5000 miles. The car never been in a wreck. I was talking to Japanese repair shop and they said there is another part of the ignition switch that could be the problem. I can't afford to buy another car, I was hoping this car can last up to 200k miles. Have anyone heard of this problem before and how I go about fixing this? Any suggestions would be helpful thanks

Hi there,

When the engine stalls does all the meter indicator lights come on? If yes then it is probably not the electricals of the ignition causing the problem.

Intermittent problems usually are hard to diagnose and I can only suggest a fuel problem. Try checking for loose or corroded connections of electrical joints along the engine main harness and fuel pump.

I just got my car back from the lynnwood honda dealer, i test drive the car for 15 miles, it seems to be running okay.. i'm going to further test the car to see if the problem is resolved.. i suggested to them to replace the EFI relay with advice left from someone in this forum for a similiar problem. They also had the alarm system (automate 415) removed and disabled. I will post another reply on the results, thanks for your response.

relay, ECM 4P ( 39794-S5A-901)
