My head gasket was bad and was leaking coolent. I was wondering when I should get my head resurfaced or if I should get it resurfaced.

If you have overheating issues, the head should be pressure tested before being refaced.

Check the cylinder block surface as well, some are badly damaged and requires refacing or replacement of the block if the overheating issues had been over a period of time.
