I am faced with replacing my Honda Civic A/C compressor for the third time since 2004. The other day while driving I lost all of the freon in the system.
My questions are:

Could my compressor still be good even though I have lost all of the freon. If so, what could cause the car to lose the Freon like that.

If I do have to replace the compressor, what should I tell my mechanic to be sure to check to ensure this compressor will last.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for the donation.

If it is freon that is missing, it might not be due to the compressor. Quite often the leakages would occur along joints, cooling coil, condenser and hoses.

You need to test the system for leakages. Tell tale signs would be accumulation of oil stains along the AC cooling system components.

If it is the compressor that is at fault, to prolong its life, I would suggest serviving the complete AC system, to clean out any impurities in the system and refill with the correct amount of lubricating oil for the system.
