1990 Honda Civic 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

What causes the battery to lose charge after sitting for a short period like 2 hours or over night. We checked all fuse under the hood and inside the car and they seem to be good. If we take the hot wire from battery and put it back on it sparks fire like something is pulling power.
