1998 Accord EX (4-cyl), Mileage 180,000.

The speedometer, odometer & cruise control stopped working all of a sudden. The check engine light is also on.

However, the tachometer & feul/temp guage work fine. No issues driving the car as well.

Is this a faulty vehicle speed sensor?

Please help! Thanks.

Whenever the CEL comes on, get it checked to determine what it is attempting to tell you. Sometimes you will go duh, I knew that but other times is catches a fault at the very beginning and though it is unnoticeable it may prevent a roadside breakdown or prevent further problems. Get the code and we can talk. It is possible it is pointing to the VSS (Variable Speed Sensor).

Thanks, Bruce, for the response. The car is in the shop now to get the code out.

I posted the question in case somebody recognized the weird combination of symptoms - no odometer or speedometer activity, but tachometer & fuel guage is working fine. Also cruise control busted.

Thanks.

I have a 1994 Honda Civic EX, and I have had TONS of problems with my speedometer. I had the sensor replaced in October for $100 at a salvage yard, and it magically stopped working a month later. Occasionally it will work perfect, but some days it will say that I am going Zero. All of the other gauges work perfect, with the exception of the cruise control, speedometer and tachometer. So I feel your pain. Maybe it could have something to do wtih the wiring? Good luck.
