My honda accord will shift into reverse and then you hear a large clunk and it won't reverse any more. If you put it into drive it just drifts and makes horrid popping noises almost like you are popping popcorn or it is about to blow up. I haven't noticed the transmisison slipping until I started up a hill and needed to turn - at that point it slipped into reverse and I had to shift into first to get it to go forward.

Automatic transmissions are quite complicated and for the average DIYer, about the only thing you can do is check the automatic transmission fluid level and ensure it is full. You may also have the capability of changing the fluid and sometimes this will "fix" a problem (more like delay the inevitable).

If fluid level is normal, be prepared for not so good news, as in: you will need a new/rebuilt/junkyard transmission. I would suggest that if this is the diagnosis, you shop around for a reputable place to ensure you are getting fair, honest pricing and quality work. Good luck!
