Car driven ~80K miles in the last year. Engine leaking ~1qt oil every 1000 miles. There is a black ring formed around the end of the exhaust pipe; I don't know whether this is related.

Mechanic says it is consuming oil.

I am wondering what typically causes this, what could possibly go wrong if this problem gets worse, and what is the worst case scenario?

Doctor, how long does the car have to live?

Thanks,
RZC

By using the word "consuming" this would indicate to me that the vehicle is burning oil. Causes of burning oil are usually bad rings or bad seals on the valves. A leak down test would point in the right direction, but either way the news is not looking that good. The burning of the oil will get worse and the life of the engine is short.
