Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Honda Accord 6 cyl Automatic 240000 miles

My 98 Accord has about 240,000 miles and
runs well.

Recently the engine has started to go from about
1000 RPM to 2000 RPM every 3 seconds or so even
if I don't touch the accelerator.

The dealership says I need a new Throttle Body
Assembly ($555 plus $104 labor).

Does that sound right? And if that's my only good
alternative, is that about the right cost?

Typically I would trust a dealerships recommendation, HOWEVER.

Idle air control valves are VERY, VERY common on these vehicles and they cause the exact same issue you are describing. 9/10 a good cleaning of the IACV will solve this problem.

Try that first.
