How do you get the codes from a 1998 Accord doing it myself?

Also, there is a strange noise coming from under the car about where the rear seat is located on the driver's side. The car is parked and is off when I hear the noise. Sounds like a motorcycle excelerating. The sound last for approx. 3 seconds and the re-occurs about every other minute. I got on my back and saw three boxes with electrical plugs and hoses (evap sys maybe?) When the noise occurs, I can feel the smaller black box vibrate a little. Does anybody know or have had expeirence with this issue?

Hi poboyflipper,

To retrieve the codes, being an OBD II compliant model, a scanner is the easiest way. Alternatively bridging the # 4 ( ground ) and # 9 would show blinking codes on the CEL.

The noise you are hearing is the EVAP valve. The valve is vibrating when pressure is passing through it. Replacing the valve would solve the problem. Using compressed air to clear the passage of dirt sometimes works.
