Hello, I just got done replacing my head gasket on my accord, replaced timming belt. I got it all back together, car starts up but idles at around 2500 rpm when I first start it up. As soon as I give it gas, the idle will surge between 1300 and 2200 rpm. I cleaned out my idle control valve and throttle body, both were gunk up. I also checked for vacuum leaks, didn't find any. My bleed my coolant the best I could. Is there somthing I am not checking? Could it be my egr gunked up too? No check engine light on.

Hi namster,

If the idling sped is too high, it would surge.

Did you try to adjust the idle speed?

Other possible causes are :

1. Vacumn leakages. Did you check for leaks at the manifold gasket?

2. Faulty Fast Idle Thermo Valve ( FITV). After the engine warms up, the FITV should close completely to reduce the amount of air going into the intake manifold.

3. Faulty IAC.

4. Insufficient coolant. If the FITV and IAC coolant hoses are clogged or does not have coolant passing through them the valve would not close fully.

EGR system would not cause surging.
