I have removed the CV joint (axle). There's a metal housing the CV joint fits into near the transmission. That part seems to be loose. Is this normal or is that a big problem?

Hi fredw,

The driveshaft consists of the inner and outer joints which are different in design.

The outer joint would be a fixed point constant velocity joint (you can twist the joint but it should not slide in or out) whereas the inner joint is a sliding CV joint (able to twist, but not as much as the outer joint, and can slide in or out). Do not pull too hard, it can slip off if too much force is exerted.

It should be ok if there is not a lot of clearance when the shaft is twisted while holding down the housing.
