If the rust on the hex area, you have water present.

Hi sassimon,

Some valves would remain open when the engine is not working.

Moisture condensation (weather) will cause the rust if the engine has not been started for some time.

It you have overheating or head gasket problem, same will happen, but still need time for rust to form.
