Begining to run errands this morning, car seemed to hesitate a bit while trying to start, more and more hesitation at each stop. Finally, won't even try to start or turn over. Dash lights stay on, and don't even blink, but, car won't start. Seems to be the starter? Should I have it towed to service station, or is it nearly impossable for me to put in a new starter, in a parking lot, and have never done it before?

It's certainly not impossible to replace the starter. Even if it's in a parking lot. Even if you've never done it before.

BUT, you need to make sure it is the starter and not battery/solenoid/loose or corroded connections etc. First before you go to all of the trouble. There is nothing worse than working hard doing something you've never done AND THEN, after completing the task, discover that that wasn't the problem!

You need to do a serious system check of your starting system. A reputable repair manual can be invaluable in this regard.

Consider this when making your decision. Maybe a parking lot is not the best learning environment.
