How would I know if the starter is going bad or already bad

If it stays engaged after the vehicle has already started. If it makes any weird whines or grinds. If it doesn't start at times and you can hear the solenoid clicking.

Care to explain what you are experiencing so I can better assist you? A starter can do a few things depending on what is internally wrong with it.
