1990 Honda accord LX. Starts fine, Idles with a miss, No check engine light, When driving it sputters on take offs and misses when driving with a really mean jerk. On take offs when it sputters it almost feels like a restrictor and after about 10 MPH it just takes off on me. When comeing to stops it sputters at about 10 MPH and while idleing. Almost like its trying to die. RPMS range from 500 to 1500 while idleing. Spark plugs are brand new, Plug wires look fine except when I grabbed the #4 while the car was running it shocked the piss out of me. Most of the time it has a slight backfire to it (probly because of the miss). We have checked fuel injectors, Plugs, Wires, Battery, Altenator, and Fuses everything seems to be fine cept the #4 wire is HOT when car is running. Also when I sit at a stop light for about a minute it starts to over heat, also when going about 25 MPH for a long peroid (im thinking thermostat). My car has a cold air intake (AEM) and a Greddy exhaust muffler. Ive checked the O2 its fine. This engine only has about 30k on it. Its the stock F22A4. The car doesnt sputter for too long if you play with the pedal a little bit. Like get on the gas let off on off on off. Please Help thank you. Also if it helps there is a leak under the distributor (Oil leak). Also there is a clicking noise under the hood at about 2000 to 2500 RPM. Doesnt do it at Low or Higher RPM

Had that same engine and problem. Tried looking at several things and found that plug wires were all that were needed.

Replace the thermostat. Then purge the air from the system. Keep track of the coolant and temp level. Check the system closely for any leaks. Now the leak may not be a dripping type of leak but might just be a steam outlet and thus an air intake problem in to what is supposed to be a closed and pressurized system.

My car is going to our "crew shop". Since I have aftermarket rebuilt almost everything I dont want a regular shop to touch it. So they are gonna put new plug wires on it and replace the Distributor seal and Replace thermostat. Also there running test on compression and Coolaint leak tests and what not. Make sure I dont have a cracked cylinder head. They said if they have the time they will replace the valve cover gasket as well because it has a slight leak nothing serious.

Thanks Bruce. I apreciate the information, It helped them know whats wrong ALOT faster. I will update you and tell you after they replace wires see if thats what it is.

If they are going to do that ask them if they can do a leak down test. Pretty simple but very good for diagnosing. Actually better than the compression test.
