Hot and cold air blowing out of the heater together

Probably a blend door is not working properly. If you have hot on one side and cold on the other this will normally be the cause. A factory scanner will show if the blend door actuator is working, these are located on the side of the heater box under the dash, access is often rather hard. I would recommend you get a mechanic to inspect this first hand before doing any further work.
