What are the causes of a head gasket failing or leaking?

More precisely, how do I know if I can simply replace the valve cover or do I need to replace the whole head gasket? Please help.

Good morning,

Head gasket failure is a result of the engine overheating. Once the temperature reaches a certain point, the gasket fails and allows combustion gases into the cooling system.

The valve cover has nothing to do with the head gasket except it must be removed to gain access to the cylinder head for removal.
