It is hard to start, have to press gas pedal way down. When it does start it runs great.I have replaced the gas filter and the cannister purge valve. Since it runs perfectly after it starts I assume I can eliminate the fuel pump being the problem?

Yep, 9 times out of 10 it will be a weak fuel pump, but to be sure here is a video and guide to help us as well. See how fast the fuel pressure comes up on the gauge,, this will tell us if there is a problem or not. You can rent a gauge form the auto parts store for free. The fuel pressure should be

and

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/engine-cranks-excessively-before-starting

Engine Running / Key On (KOEO):

51-61 psi or (355-421 kPa)

Fuel Pressure Drop After Shutdown:

Should hold above 21 psi for at least 5 minutes
(If it drops quickly: leaking injector, faulty pump check valve, or leaking pressure regulator.)

Please upload a short video in your response of the problem, so I can see what's going on :)
