I cant start my truck. My 89 GMC S-15 Jimmy. When I turn the key, my starter spins and their is a grinding noise when my engine is trying to turn over. When it turns on it goes away. I replaced my starter about a year ago. Currently now, when I turn my key I can hear my starter spin and nothing catches. Every once in a while it will catch and grind trying to turn over my engine.

Hi there,

you will have to remove the starter and inspect the ring gear, I would say that the teeth on the ring gear have been chewed away ( the engine will tend to stop in the same place when it is worn, it will pull up on the highest compression most often so the starter is working away on the same teeth on the ring gear) if so the transmission must be removed to re new the drive plate,
