Be more specific. What color is the smoke? Just how bad is the mileage and what is that compared to what the car's rated for?

Gas mileage can be plenty of things. Fuel pump, fuel filter, distributor cap, rotor, plugs, wires, oil leaks, cam position sensor, oxygen sensor, maf/map sensor, dirty throttle body. Yada yada yada.
