Gas milage?

I'm trying to find out does GM offers any trucks that have great gas milage like my 2 buddies 1996 Z-71 4x4 Silverado 5.7 they get 25-28mph, I have a 1998 Z-71 4x4 Silverado 5.0 and get 18 mph . I need to know why does the bigger moter get better gas milage. Is the gearing different? I was thinking about buying 2003/4 Silverado or Avalanche with the 5.3 but I'm scared of the gas milage. Is there a difference in the "Z-71" package?

All I do is hunt and fish and cant afford the gas bill.
Thanks

D.

The 5L engine was a mistake in my eyes. Poor power and economy. The new 5.3L engines are nice, small bore for economy, a little more rpm's than your friends 350's. Z-71 is mostly suspension

If u want good mileage for a chev pickup id go with 1996 or newer seeing they are the nice vortec engines which get good mileage. 25-28 mpg seems a bit unrealistic to me but 21 mpg is posible on the highway with these engines. I own a 1995 Z71 with the older version of the 350 and I get about 275 miles to a tank of gas which is worth getting rid of if you like your truck.
