Electrical problem
2000 GMC Jimmy 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

the battery light comes on, motor tries to die-then volt gauge goes really high, lights get really bright--then it goes back to normal and is hard to shift--few minutes everything is completely normal

Welcome to the forum. I'd make sure the battery has a full charge and the connections are good. Have the charging system checked. Also, check for any trouble codes. Around here some of the national brand autostores will check codes for free.

Chances are that your voltage regulator is no longer working, then sending voltage spikes through the rest of the electrical system. Replace your alternator
