My oil pan needs replacement as the drain plug is stripped and it is leaking oil down the side of the pan suggesting a new gasket is needed on the oil pan. My question is whether I could do that myself. Do I have to lift the engine? I have heard that some jimmy's need the engine blocked to get to the oil pan.

If I can, what are some tips on the whole process?

4x4's are a little harder. The oil pan is right up against the front diff. The front diff has to come out, this is difficult on the ground to say the least. Might want to shop around having it done. Once the diff is out the pan is easy
