My engine light cam on and stayed on for a week. I took it in to the dealership and I was told that I need to replace the cam phaser actuator. The engine light has gone off before the part was installed and has not come on since then. Do I need to go ahead with the repair. A friend who has the envoy xl had the same problem. She changed the gas cap and the problem has not returned

Yes I would repace the cam phaser actuator, because what happens is the actuator has small screens on it and from oil sludge build up they fall off and go inside the engine and could cause damage. When you replace the actuator it is recommended to also change the oil. As far as your friend they had a different problem, a gas cap will not fix a cam phaser problem, they are 2 different problems. Post back with any other questions.
