Engine Mechanical problem
2003 GMC Envoy 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My wife started her car and the speedometer ran up to 60 and started twitching. She shut it off and it has not cranked since. I've replaced the battery and still nothing. No sounds. Everything else works. The gear shift is locked in park and will not move to the neutral position. Don't know if this is a safety feature issue or if it could be the starter or electrical. Where do I go from here?

It was the speedometer correct and not the tachometer? If the engine revved really high then it was probably the tachometer. I havent seen a tach designed like that in awhile, most are guaged by a single digit and then x1000 but some are out there that use two digits x100. (If this is the case then let me know because everything below becomes irrelevant.)

Check the computer with an OBD II tester for codes.

If it was just the speedometer then most likely the sensor or gear needs to be replaced.

Remove the starter and have it tested on a work bench.

As for the transmission not comming out of gear do a visual check over the transmission for any obvious signs of mechanical failure. (I.E. Trans. Oil slick, metal shavings in the bellhousing, warped or twisted shifter linkage)
