1999 GMC C2500 Service 4-wheel drive

My son passed away Feb 2008 and I bought his 1999 GMC Sierra truck C2500. The light keeps coming on to Service 4-Wheel Drive and I'm told it's a computer problem that needs diagnosed by a dealer and they are charging $100. Are there other places I can get this checked out? Advise, thank you.

Hi:
First, I'm very sorry to hear about your son. I have two of my own and don't know what I would do if something happened.

As far as the light, it could be a problem with the switch, actuator. If there is an Auto Zone near you or Advance Auto, contact them and see if it's something they could check. If they can, it will most likely be free of charge.
