I have a 1996 gmc 1500 z71. When I put my truck into four wheel drive high. The light comes on when I go in reverse but when I go forward the light turns of and the four wheel drive doesnt work. When I put it int four wheel drive low. It rides like its in 4x4 but the front tires dont spin. Any idea what could be wrong?

Is this a push button 4x4 switch or a mechanical shifter?
If memory serves, there is a servo motor that engages the front axles and one that puts the transfer case into 4x4 on the push button type. Either the servo is bad or the connections going to it are bad.

Once you get this working, try to put the vehicle into 4-wheel one a month or so (on a mile of straight road or some dirt road somewher) just to keep everything lubed up.

Good Luck

There is still a servo motor that engages the front end.
You might have a bad motor or bad sensor switch somewhere.
Talk with a mechanic from GM. They should be able to help you narrow it down to electrical or mechanical.
