I went outside to find transmission fliuid all over theplace. However, the transmission shifts completely fine, not rough at all. It is not the hoses, what could the other possibilities be? The mechanic said it needs to be rebuilt but if it is shifting fine in all gears why is that?

You probably blew oil out the vent on top of the trans. Check your fluid when it is hot and in park. You'll probably see it's low. However do not change the fluid in the trans as it will eat the clutchs in side. It's ok to add though.
