I have a 1993 GMC 1500 Z71 5.7 liter engine with 133,000 miles.
I am having problems with the starter grinding, but not on every start. Its fine for a day or two than it grinds once and after that it starts okay. I had a new flex plate installed about three weeks ago and it was fine for a few days then it started making grinding noises again. So, I checked the starter bolts and they were loose, so I tightened them down really good and it was fine for a week and now it makes noises again. The one thing that is really bothering me is the fact that it's fine for a few days but then grinds once and then its fine after that. Any thoughts? Love my truck, but hate the noise.

Have not replaced the starter yet, but might take the starter next week and have it inspected. It only grinds when I try to start it. It seems as if the spindle on the starter is not engaging the flywheel.

I have a 91, same problem, what had happened was someone installed the starter( not properly) and it eventually chewed down some teeth on the flywheel, so it would only grind when it was in this location, didnt know this until I needed another starter, when I replaced it, like the old pontiacs, they all needed shims, so I installed shims, measuring the distance between gear and flywheel, helps alot, but now I only have problems when it is on the bad spots of the flywheel.
